What makes Fernie special to you?
Fernie has the perfect combination of people who were born here, people who chose to come here to live, and people who came to visit and couldn’t seem to leave or became frequent repeat visitors. Our community is built on people who are happy to be here. Fernie gave me an opportunity to explore my passion for outdoor adventure, meet my wife and raise my family. What more could a guy ask for?
What makes you proud to be Canadian?
Canadians have always had a great reputation internationally. The Canadian flag is well recognized on any traveller’s backpack, and Canadians are more than proud to display it. Canada, especially Fernie is a popular destination for travellers from abroad. I think we have the unique ability to welcome people into our country and communities and make them feel that it can be home.
What is your Fernie story?
I came to Fernie in October of 1979 to get away from Saskatchewan winters! My Aunt and Uncle owned Ed’s Sports Centre on 2nd Avenue, its Freshies now. I was not a skier but I really wanted to try, and the combination of place, time, and some great deals on ski gear made it an easy decision. I came for a weekend to check it out and was offered a job at the Old Elevator Steak House. It didn’t take long for me to realize that Fernie was going to be my home.
