What makes Fernie special to you?

Before living in Fernie, I never experienced walking from the post office to the store, randomly running into five people I know, and stopping to chat because we were all genuinely interested in how the other person was doing.  I am proud to call Fernie home because this place is a small town with a big heart.

It is all the little things about Fernie that make you love this place: you waive to neighbours when you drive by; when you walk into a store, a familiar face is holding the door for you; you go to the bank and the teller asks you about your last vacation because she remembers you had ordered some foreign currency; and the owner at local breakfast nook knows exactly what you would like.

What makes you proud to be Canadian?

I am proud to be Canadian because our country embraces diversity.  A group of friends from a myriad of backgrounds can have open and meaningful discussions, and share their own stories about their race, culture, religion, sexual orientation and politics without fear.  I love this land because I can practice law as a young, immigrant, Asian woman and I am embraced by my coworkers, colleagues and clients.

 What is your Fernie story?

Fernie welcomed my husband, Graeme and I with open arms when we first moved here from Vancouver in 2013.  The business community and our neighbours were so supportive once we began our law practice at Rockies Law.  We continue to make so many great friends here.  Fernie also gave us the opportunity to immerse ourselves in volunteering.  So many non-profits welcomed our ideas and contributions to their projects.  I am proud to be part of the amazing Fernie & District Historical Society, Fernie Women’s Resource Centre, Fernie Pets Society and Fernie Chamber of Commerce.
