What makes Fernie special to you?
Fernie is where I choose to live. It is an absolutely stunning outdoor playground filled with amazing people. It is my favorite place filled with the most interesting and diverse collection of people I have ever met. An assortment of dedicated, outgoing, adventurous, athletic, individuals who are willing to push themselves and others in all of the outdoor pursuits the Elk Valley has to offer. Fernie offers a small town atmosphere with international flavor only minutes away from world-class mountains; rivers and lakes making it a very special place to me.
What makes you proud to be Canadian?
Canada to me is an immense nation filled with a diverse collection of people from all over the world. A society in which everyone has the right to their own life, regardless of how long they have lived in Canada, where they are from, or their personally held beliefs. A mixture of people who truly have the ability to do what they want, when they want, where they want. A country filled with people who have time for each other and the willingness and desire to help each other through difficulties in our daily lives.
What’s your Fernie story?
I moved here to Fernie in the fall of 1996 to work on the roof of the Aquatic Center. My desire to live here began early. I woke up to a meter snow in mid-October on my first day in town. We could not work due to the snow so I went skiing. I live here because of the small-town atmosphere with the international community feel. A community of like-minded people from all over Canada and the World who enjoy the outdoors and all that the Elk Valley has to offer. Fernie is filled with people who are willing to share their knowledge of the surrounding valleys with everyone, not just their friends and other Fernie-ites. Making sure that everyone who visits will leave with an understanding of what a special place Fernie is.
