What makes Fernie special to you?

Fernie is special to me because it seems to be a place where everyone who is not from here comes to be “reborn”. It’s a place of transformation, where the magic of the changing seasons always seems to motivate me just when I start to lose steam. There are so many people here from different walks of life all sharing in many of the same values. Active healthy outdoor living with a hunger for travel and adventure. But no matter where we travel to Fernie always seems to be the one place that everyone comes back to.

What makes you proud to be a Canadian?

One word, “Integrity”. As Canadians we have a lot of integrity. Being a Canadian is more than just “being nice and polite” as we are portrayed to the rest of the world. It means you always do the right thing even when nobody is watching. That also means making the tough decisions and doing the things that no one else wants to do (which sometimes aren’t so polite lol). Standing up for those who many would chastise and staying true to ourselves.

What’s your Fernie story?

It was the 2001/2002 ski season. Two paramedic friends of mine and I came to Fernie for one night to ski the next day. I was blown away by the amount of snow. Driving into town past the Snow Valley Motel I remember not being able to see the other side of the road because of the giant window down the middle of highway 3.

The next morning travelling up the Timber chair past Hollywood rock I knew that this place was where it was at.

When I got home that night I immediately told my now wife then girlfriend Jana about how amazing Fernie was and that next weekend we came back. We talked about how amazing it would be to live here. At the time it was only a pipe dream but with some hard work, hard decisions, sacrifice and a 2 year detour in Fort McMurray we made the move to Fernie… 3 kids later ha!

I still have to work away from Fernie having no regrets about the life I have chosen for my family and I. The sense of community Fernie has that brings out the best in people no matter where you are from or how long you have been here makes it one of the best places to live and raise 3 busy kids. There is no shortage of things to do here in any season.
