JULIE COMETE

What makes Fernie special to you?

Fernie IS a community first of all. Everyone seems to look after each other and help one another like a great big family really.  For my family and I, it means the world since our families live far away, we know we have an adopted family we can count on here.  This makes it a wonderful place to live, feeling safe and loved and cared for by neighbours and friends.  I don’t think there are many places in the world (although I haven’t been everywhere yet! lol) like Fernie and that makes me proud!

What makes you proud to be Canadian?

Oh Canada! It ain’t perfect but it’s ain’t too bad!! Nature, nature nature! Peacefulness. You can hike in this country and not hear a single noise, not see a single person.   Freedom is another important one. Free to be who you really are, to believe in what you want to believe in, to love who you want to love.  It’s a colourful country in every way and colours bring me joy!

What is your Fernie story?

10 years ago (almost) I followed my heart and my heart was following a man!! We broke up 2 months after we got here. I found in Fernie the perfect balance – a small town with an international flair in the middle of majestic mountains filled with people who inspire me and help me grow.   In Fernie, I found my love (longer lasting this time!), I fulfilled myself work-wise (not sure I can call it a career?) and I became a mother!  I also learned to snowboard and mountain bike, started yoga and meditation, attended some great festivals and experienced some beautiful live shows! Like I said, I found it all in a tiny mountain town I now call home!  Fernie you’ve been good to me and I thank you!
