What makes Fernie special to you?

From the moment I arrived here 36 years ago, I knew I had found my 2nd home, a second place to call home. Fernie was welcoming with open arms and as a young girl from southern Ontario, I needed that warm embrace. Fernie is still home and as I’ve grown older that warm embrace has gotten bigger with my wonderful family and friends still there to encircle me. I shall never forget that.

What makes you proud to be Canadian?

I’m a proud Canadian because we live in a ┬ácountry where we have all the freedoms and rights that some countries take for granted. Over the years I’ve seen people have their rights stripped and squashed because of religious or just trying to be who you are taken away. Canada is so diverse and I’m glad Canada welcomes people off all backgrounds to enjoy our Canadian freedom. I couldn’t imagine growing up anywhere else.

What’s your Fernie story?

When I left my hometown of Galt, Ontario with my good friend Maria we were originally moving to Calgary. We had packed up my car and went on a cross-country adventure, but as luck would have it (although we didn’t know it at the time ) we ended up in a small town called Fernie. I had friends that I knew from Galt that had settled in Fernie so a visit was in order before I settled down in Calgary. Well Maria lasted 3 months and I’ve never left and that was 36 years ago. I fell in love with the mountains and a local boy I now call my husband. My daughter Emily grew up here and I am truly blessed to call Fernie my home.
