What makes Fernie special to you?
Fernie is where our children were born and the community that help nurture our young family. Of course it is a beautiful community with many recreational and cultural opportunities but it is the people and the sense of community that is what really makes Fernie special. When I walk down the street I see people young and old who have given of themselves to make Fernie what it is today. It is heartwarming and makes me proud to see the youth of our community who will take up the torch and continue to make Fernie such an incredible place to live.
What makes you proud to be Canadian?
Canada is like a small town spread across millions of square kilometres. From Vancouver Island to Newfoundland people are warm, welcoming and supportive. We may not always agree with each other but we live our lives as neighbours. Our underlying tolerance and compassion comes clearly to the surface in times of crisis, there are always fellow Canadians to lend a helping hand. There are times when our nature seems to wane but I have faith that it will surge once more to take on the next challenge facing our great country.
What is your Fernie story?
When people ask me what brought me to Fernie I smile and point to my wedding ring. Like many others, I followed my heart to Fernie and it didn’t steer me wrong. When I first moved here from the coast 20 years ago friends would say, “Where’s Fernie?” Now they say, “Wow, Fernie!” Fernie is a place when things are possible, the warmth and enthusiasm of the people keep me here.
