SHARON SWITZER

What makes Fernie special to you?

I derive mean from working with people to make Fernie not bigger and better but more inclusive, more environmentally conscious, and a more meaningful experience for all people.  What I hold dear are the feelings of not being rushed, pushed, or exploited in any way.  I like that Fernie-ite’s are laid back, late for everything, breathing, and looking around in awe.

What makes you proud to be Canadian?

I am deeply concerned about the plight of the world refugee crisis and I am so proud to be a Canadian that believes in the human rights and dignity of all people.  The characteristic that I value most in our collective Canadian consciousness is heart.   We care about people, and that matters to me.

What is your Fernie story?

I met my husband here in 1981, we there both raised in Manitoba.  We raised our two children living on 12th Avenue in the Annex for 36 years.  I’m here because I love the natural beauty that awaits me just out my door every day.  One blue bird day in Fernie can lift my spirit into the long winter months.  Why will I stay here?  I’m lucky enough to have started young and own my home so I can stay.  I hope to continue to fill my days with the joy of a simple life filled with family, friends, and the activities I value most.
